Breast-Feeding Linked to IQ

A study confirms that breast-feeding of infants is accompanied by about a five-points higher IQ than in bottle-fed infants. At least 60 percent of the average intelligence gain seen in breast-fed infants comes from breast milk’s nutritional value, rather than benefits from maternal bonding.Intelligence is benefited by breast-feeding for up to six months. Children who are breast-fed for less than eight weeks show no IQ benefit.

Tea may protect elderly Bones

Tea may protect elderly Bones

A daily cup of tea may protect elderly women from osteoporosis. New research suggests that daily tea-drinking makes the aging bones of elderly women look five years younger and significantly reduces the risk of bone fractures. Elderly tea-drinkers have 5 percent higher mean bone-mineral density than non-tea-drinkers.The apparent benefits of drinking tea are independent of whether women smoke, drink coffee or use hormone replacement therapy. It also makes no difference to the bone-mineral density increase if women drink one or two cups or several pots of tea a day.The positive effects of tea on bone density may be caused by the presence of isoflavonoids. Flavonoids – brightly colored chemicals found in fruit, vegetables and herbs – are being credited with an increasing number of positive effects on health.

Overweight people loosing a little bit of weight -gain a lot

Overweight people who manage to lose just a little bit of weight – even just a pound a year – may substantially lower their risk of high blood pressure. The hard part, of course, is keeping the weight off. But a new study shows that surprisingly little weight loss – if it can be sustained – carries a big payoff in better health.

Benefits of Sex

  • Good sex helps in boosting your immune system or maintaining a healthy weight. It gives higher levels of an antibody called immunoglobulin A or IgA, which can protect you from getting colds and other infections.
  • Having sex twice or more a week reduced the risk of fatal heart attack by half for the men, compared with those who had sex less than once a month.
  • Helps in lowering Blood Pressure.
  • Frequent sex helps in Overall Stress Reduction.
  • Having sex and orgasms increases levels of the hormone oxytocin, the so-called love hormone, which helps us bond and build trust.
  • It Reduces Pain. Having sex increases the level of hormone oxytocin, which in turn increases endorphins levels, and pain declines. So, headache, arthritis pain, or PMS symptoms seem to improve after sex.
  • Frequent ejaculations, especially in young men, may reduce the risk of prostate cancer later in life.
  • Sex promotes release of Oxytocin which promotes a good sound sleep. We all know that a Good Sound Sleep has lots of overall benefit.
In a study done to find out the relation between Sex and Cardiovascular benefit it was found that those who have regular sex do get some cardiovascular protection. This benefit was seen in a group who had sex in a married relationship and not among those having casual sex outside marriage.

HIV in Females – its different!

HIV in Females – its different!

It has been found that the markers ( Viral Load, T-cells ) doctors generally use to determine progression of HIV infection behave differently in women and people of color as compared to white men.

  • Viral load, a measurement of how many virus particles are in the blood stream, is lower in women than in men infected for the same amount of time.
  • It remains low in people of color longer than in whites, so women of color generally have the lowest viral loads of all.
  • T-cells, protective immune cells whose number declines over the course of HIV infection, start out at higher levels in healthy women, and decline more slowly in HIV-infected women than they do in men.

More research is needed to determine what these differences mean in practical terms in the treatment of women.
